ENOUGH WITH THE "C"

Picture
Terry Collins has started polling players on whether David Wright should be officially named the team’s captain, the manager told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York yesterday.

“Obviously it would be a tremendous honor,” Wright told Rubin. “I would take it very seriously and humbly.”
In either case, Collins said a decision will not be made before Wright leaves for the World Baseball Classic on Friday.

Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog.com:
My, god, man, just do it already. It really doesn’t matter either way. I mean, I’m for it because I think it looks cool and I think it’s a nice visual reminder of what is expected of his teammates. But, it’s not the end-all, be-all of success, and I’m not going to lose sleep if it doesn’t happen. Seriously, we’re not selecting a new President or Pope here. What’s the worst that can happen?

Michael Baron, MetsBlog.com:
It seems silly, but I almost want a decision made on this so the discussion finally ends. The thing is, Wright is already this team’s captain, this team’s leader, and the shining example of what to do and what not to do for his teammates. It makes no difference if they name him the official captain, or if it simply remains understood.

I totally agree with both Matt Cerrone and Michael Baron here.  Enough in enough already.  When did the "C" become a big deal in baseball?  IT NEVER DID, IT'S STIL NOT... DOES ANYONE OUTSIDE OF THE TRI STATE AREA CARE?

"C" on a jersey is hockey thing if you ask me.  There is a reason for it in hockey.  Only the Captains or Assistant Captains may converse with the refs regarding penalties, etc.

In Football it was a marketing job by the NFL to put "C" patches on the jerseys with colored stars for each year you were a Captain on that team.  Then they have the brilliant idea to make Camo ones and Pick ones... UGH!

Just enough already with messing with the uniform and the stupid "C".  Let Terry Collins focus on this team and how to manage it and not on sewing letters on chests!

The 2013 Mets slogan is...

...GREAT TIME. GREAT PLACE.  GREAT MEMORIES.

Well then LOL  I just got the feeling that the negative fans are going to have a FIELD DAY with this.  Let the games begin!

2013 ROSTER???  MOVES ARE COMING!

Picture
We are starting to hear rumors that Sandy Alderson and the Mets are talking to Michael Bourn again as well as Jose Valverde.  The names of K-Rod and Brian Wilson have also come up again.

Think about this as a potential Opening Day Roster / Depth Chart:

1B: Davis
2B: Murphy
SS: Tejada
3B: Wright
OF: Duda, Bourn, Nieuwenhuis, Baxter/Valdespin
C: Buck, __?__
STARTERS:  Santana, Niese, Marcum, Gee, Harvey
BULLPEN:  Parnell, Edgin, Carson, Familia, Atchinson, Hawkins, Valverde/Wilson/K-Rod, Francisco (CL)

Now I know this chart means that the Mets would have to sign 3-4 guys before they start camp in less than two weeks but in my view this team would be vastly improved over last years team.  Sandy Alderson would have done a great job on a somewhat 'limited' or controlled budget and very quietly in my opinion put this team in a spot to at least hang in the race for that second wild card spot.

I know a lot of people have been talking about the outfield of the 1999 and 2000 Mets with the likes of Bubba Trammel, Timo Perez, Darryl Hamilton, Benny Agbayani and Jay Payton.  But the difference was that you could hide those bats in a lineup that had a Piazza and a Ventura and an Olerud.  This lineup is not there yet and doesn't have the power threat a Piazza brought with him at each at bat.

I would be THRILLED with a team put together like the one above going into camp.

Baseball reading material...

Picture
One of the many things I admire my wife for is her ability to pick up a book and go through it in no time.  It's one of my goals in life to become more of a 'book guy’ but for now I'll stick to a baseball library and the box scores.  But these baseball books really hooked into me.  They’re great books & quick reads.  There also seems to be a lot of Mets related books coming out in the coming weeks and months.  Here are some links to them as well as a list of my favorite baseball related books.  Enjoy!  (And if you have any suggestions, let me know!)

The HOF debate & PIAZZA!

Picture
I don’t mean to beat a dead horse here but I didn't have this site up and running in time last week so here goes.

I have always enjoyed the approach Bob Costas took on if a player is or isn’t a Hall of Famer.  He said once, and I am paraphrasing it, “that if you have to question it, he (the player) probably is not.”  And for the most part I think that holds very true.

In this years vote Mike Piazza feel short of the required 75% for induction and many questions and views came into play.  PED’s clearly the main issue.  Was he using? Wasn’t he?  Who ever heard his name attached to ANYTHING?  Is it all locker room rumor?  And so on and so on.  I believe the baseball writers that are around these guys everyday of the season know a lot more than the rest of us as far as the rumor mill goes.  So much so that I also believe they know the truth of who was using and not.  Mitchell Report and rumors aside the case falls into the hands of the Baseball Writers Assn. of America (BBWAA) to vote for the players.  Now, lets just put the rumors aside.  Is Mike Piazza a Hall of Famer?  I say YES!  Please tell me how he’s not.  Well, here is how Kevin Davidoff of the NY Post backed his case:

If you watched Piazza play, you were captivated by him. Did anyone else hit those heat-seeking missiles like he did? You felt like all of his homers flew about a foot over the shortstop’s glove and then soared over the wall, breaking a car window in the process.  He hit 427 home runs, with 396 of those as a catcher. More than any other catcher in baseball history.  But again: The goal here isn’t to get caught up in images, or to hone in on any one number. It’s to look at the whole picture.

If Piazza is on next year’s ballot -- I assume he’ll get the five percent of the votes necessary to carry him over -- then I absolutely would consider voting for him. He’s a very worthy candidate. On this clogged ballot, though, I don’t believe he’s one of the 10 best. Not when you look at the historical value measures like WAR and JAWS.

What I did was, I looked at every candidate on this ballot and ranked him according to both WARs, Baseball-Reference’s WAR7 (which takes a candidate’s best seven seasons by WAR, to consider a player’s peak) and Jaffe’s JAWS. I rewarded a player one point for finishing first in a column, two points for second, etc. -- and then ranked them by lowest score to highest. Bonds, for instance, ranked first because he had just four points; atop all four categories, he received one point for each.  Using this process, Piazza placed 14th on my list of candidates.

Yes, I place a huge emphasis on these statistics. Because these statistics have no emotions. They have no horse in the race. They just try to determine value. And I think the best way to determine a Hall of Fame ballot is without emotions. That’s why Piazza is a No. It has nothing to do with suspicions that he used illegal PEDs.

I love stats as much as the next guy.  But I’ll also be the first to say I think the ‘new’ WAR stats are just too over the top.  I like Moneyball but I don’t think you can win with it. ANYONE who watched Piazza play knows the fear his bat and presence in a lineup put into the other team.  His defense clearly was suspect.  No argument there.  But there are plenty of guys in the Hall that are not 5 tool guys.  By leaving Piazza out (for now) you have not told the complete story of baseball.

In light of tonight’s Lance Armstrong Oprah Interview, if you looked at Lance Armstrong and did not know what he did for a living or who he was, do you think he looks like a juicehead?  MY POINT EXACTLY.  If you are going to keep a guy out for rumors then we have problems because then EVERY player in this era is suspect.  I don’t buy the “HE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A JUICE GUY” Does Andy Pettitte look like one?  BECAUSE HE IS!  People always say because I am a self proclaimed Yankee Hater that I would love to see Jeter on some PED list but they’re wrong.  I want to see Rivera on one.  And why?  Because its guys like Mo that don’t “look” like a juice guy that I feel were using.  They were just taking different types.  Explain to me how Mo never got hurt.  Maybe he’s taking stuff that lets him heal quicker and stay healthier from the normal wear and tear of the baseball season.

I’ll respect the view that many of the BBWAA stated that 1st ballot induction is for the elite of the elite.  But to let the power go to their heads and keep guys out on suspicion I think is flat out wrong.

#MOVEBANNERDAY

Picture
Our Banner from last year!
ESPN has released its Sunday Night Baseball schedule for the first half of the 2013 season and it includes moving the Sunday, May 26 Mets vs. Braves game at Citi Field from a 1:10 start to the ESPN 8pm first pitch.  PROBLEM lies in the fact that the New York Mets have already stated this will be BANNER DAY!

Banner Day FINALLY returned last season after a way too long absence.  As much as the Mets can say it was brought back as a way to honor the past as part of the 50th Anniversary season celebrations but I whole heartedly believe it was the outcries by us the fans to bring back the day that was made and meant for us. Nothing beat walking around the warning track while the players were still warming up.  Our faces and banners being displayed on the video board, with people in the stands.  Anyone who attended it last year knows it was a great experience.  A little disorganized at first, but great nonetheless.  It's Banner DAY for a reason.  It's a day for the fans and families.  Let's not make this another late evening event where you have to question to bring your kids or not.  The Mets really stepped up to the plate by listening and bringing it back last year but now it's up to us the fans again.

The Mets have NO CONTROL with what games ESPN chooses for their Sunday Night lineup.  Its part of their (ESPN) contract with Major League Baseball.  So I am glad the the early outcry hasn't been toward the Amazins'.

So with the help of the social media outlets and other Mets fan bloggers lets keep #MOVEBANNERDAY trending on Twitter.  It's early enough for the Mets to move the promotion to another day.  I believe we can make it happen!  LET'S GO METS!

FEAR THE BEARD heading to CITI?

Picture
Rumors are starting to circulate that Sandy Alderson went to a private workout to watch former San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson pitch following his Tommy John surgery last year.  Wilson has been saying all along that he sees himself being ready to go Opening Day.  So now the question is, is this a good move moving forward for the Mets?  My view 100% YES!

Hear me out on this.  FACTS: He's a proven closer, proven winning closer on a team that ONLY had pitching.  He's coming off TJ surgery.  He's a personality!

Being able to sign him to a 2 year deal seems perfect in that most Major League bullpens are built up and broken down each year with maybe the exception of a few big time closers or that key lefty specialist.  The Mets are in the unique position of knowing they probably aren't competing for anything this season but are building towards 2014-2015.  Adding Wilson would bring some notoriety to a bullpen that lacks, well pretty much everything.  Lets face it, Frank Frank is solid but I think he is what he is at this point in his career. He (F.F.) will get the job done most of the time but he's not that intense closer that quality teams identify with.

I like the idea of having Wilson here.  Test him out, see what we can get out of him this season and roll that into next year when we start the climb to the top again.  Recently, pitchers coming back from T.J. have been good in that 12-18 month range after then went under the knife.  This seems to fall perfectly into the Mets time frame.  As long as they don't need to break the bank for him I say GO GET 'EM SANDY!

And as always, LETS GO METS!

All Star Game ticket Strip Prices

Picture
Season ticket and plan holders have started getting their All Star Game invoices this week.  Prices range from the mid $500 - $insane depending on your seat location.  Obviously there is a big mark up even from the OPENING DAY and SUBWAY SERIES SERIES pricing.  Let's face it, The ASG has always been an expensive event. It's that way in every major sport in the world.  It's a premium event, a luxury some would say.  You are paying to see the best in the world all in one place.  Same way we argue we pay to much to see this Mets team sometimes.  Wait 'till they get good again, prices WILL go up.  It's just the business of sports.  Sadly enough it will price fans out of the event.  I get that!  But all the negativity around the prices for ASG strips should not be directed at the Mets or the fan base that purchases them.

This is something positive for us as Mets fans.  Something we can look forward to.  We haven't had much to cheer about in the past few years.  We've been mocked by cross town teams, MLB and even other players in the league.  We've been through the Madoff mess and we are here and now.  THE ALL STAR GAME WILL BE IN OUR BACKYARD!

Let's embrace this event.  Let's show baseball what true die-hard LOYAL fans look and sound like.  Put some money aside, wear the BLUE & ORANGE and enjoy the mid summer classic.  It is a great four to five days of baseball.  The FanFest that will be held is a family atmosphere with booths and exhibits, games and lectures.  The celebrity softball game on Sunday is a bit cheesy but you'll get to see some old time major leaguers and some celebrities.  The futures game is GREAT.  You'll see the top prospects in baseball in person.  All the names we hear about right there in Citi Field.  Hopefully the Mets will have their young stars on display.  In 2006 I was lucky enough to travel to Pittsburgh and saw GARY CARTER manage the Futures USA team.  The HOME RUN DERBY has become an out of control, life of its own, ESPN event.  But for some reason I get into it, once I learn to block out Chris Berman.  Then, as we always do, on the second Tuesday in July, we get the All Star Game.  All the games current stars in their own home and away uniforms on the foul lines, tipping their caps to baseball and to Queens.

Have your own opinions on the finances of baseball and the Mets and the Wilpons, etc.  But lets take a step back and stand proud as Mets fans for this is something positive we should embrace.  LETS GO METS!
